Enter Text and Numbers

You’ll want to know how to enter text and numbers on your phone so you can:

  • Enter passwords
  • Create new contacts, appointments, and tasks
  • Send e-mail
  • Send SMS text messages

For an even quicker way to enter contacts, appointments, and tasks that already exist in your desktop Outlook, see Synchronizing with a PC.) Smartphones come with one of two basic types of entry methods. To view instructions, select the link below that matches the type of entry on your smartphone:

ENTERING TEXT AND NUMBERS WITH A QWERTY KEYBOARD

  • Enter Text. Enter text in much the same way you do on your computer.
  • Enter Numbers. For the 10 keys containing both numbers and letters, if you want to enter a number, press the function key first; then press the key with the number you want. (The function key has a half moon or dot on it.) If you want to enter multiple numbers in succession, press and hold the function key while pressing the numbers. When you release the function key, you will return to text mode.
  • Enter a Space. Press the Space key.
  • Entering Punctuation. If the punctuation mark you want is on the upper part of a key (for example, the exclamation point on the upper part of the H key), press the function key and then press the key with the punctuation mark. (The function key has a half moon or dot on it.)
If the punctuation mark you want is on the lower part of the key (as is the case with the key that contains a period and an apostrophe), you don’t need to press the function key—just press the key with the punctuation mark.
  • Enter Symbols. For keys containing both a number and a symbol, if you want to enter the symbol, press the function key first; then press the key with the symbol you want. (The function key has a half moon or dot on it.) Note: The location and selection of symbols varies from phone to phone.
  • Delete characters. To backspace and delete a single character, press the Back Arrow key. To backspace and delete an entire text or numeric field, press and hold the Back Arrow key.
  • Change case (uppercase, lowercase, and caps lock). Press the Up Arrow key, which is usually at the lower right of the keypad, to change from uppercase to lowercase. Press and hold the Up Arrow key to enter multiple uppercase letters. When you release the up arrow key, you will return to lowercase.

ENTERING TEXT AND NUMBERS WITH A 12-KEY KEYPAD

Smartphones with 12-key keypads provide multiple ways or “modes” for entering text and numbers.
When you select a field that requires just text or just numbers, the phone automatically selects the appropriate input mode, so there is no need to take any action. If you are entering free-form text—or you’re in a field that requires a combination of numbers and letters, you must first select an input mode.

To select an input mode:

Using the Various Entry Modes

  • Multipress (for text only). Your 12-key keypad, like a standard phone, has numbers 0 through 9, plus the * and # keys. Each number key also represents three or four letters. In multipress mode, enter a letter by repeatedly pressing the key that contains the letter you want until that letter appears. (For example, to enter the letter “c,” press the “abc” key three times quickly.)

When in Multipress mode, the mode indicator will show either abc, Abc, or ABC indicating lowercase, initial capital letter, or uppercase. Tip. In Multipress mode, the first letter of a sentence is automatically capitalized.

  • T9 Predictive Typing (for text only): T9 typing predicts the word that you are typing based on the letters that you enter. This mode eliminates the need to press keys repeatedly. Just press the key corresponding to each letter you want once, and Windows Mobile will analyze your key presses and attempt to complete the word. For example, if you press 7, 4, 6, 3, Windows Mobile will enter the word “shoe” as well as provide alternative words. Just select the word you want. If you don’t see the word you want in the T9 dictionary, click Add Word? from the list, and enter the word using Multipress.

To enter a space after a word, press the # key. Note: Windows Mobile will automatically add a space after a word when you select it from the T9 dictionary.

When in T9 mode, the mode indicator will show either t9, T9 or T9 indicating all lowercase, initial capital letter, or all uppercase. Tip. In T9 mode, the first letter of a sentence is automatically capitalized.

  • Numeric (for numbers only): This mode is used only for entering numbers. In numeric mode, pressing a key will enter only the number on that key—not any of the letters.

If you need to enter a number within a line of text, change to Numeric mode to enter the number, and then change back to Multipress or T9 mode to finish entering the text.

When in Numeric mode, the mode indicator will show 123.

  • Enter a space Press the # key.
  • Enter punctuation. In Multipress mode, press 1 repeatedly until you see the punctuation mark that you want. Tip: To see all of the available symbols, press and hold the # key. In T9 mode, press 1, and select from a list of common punctuation.
  • Enter a symbol Press and hold the * key. On the menu, click Symbols to display the Symbol page. Select the symbol you want and click Done.
  • Delete characters. To backspace and delete a single character, press the Back Arrow key. To backspace and delete an entire text or numeric field, press and hold the Back Arrow key.

  • Press the Center Joystick to select Date and Time.

  • Scroll to Time and enter the current time. Again, use the left and right joystick controls to move between hour, minutes, and seconds, and press the function key in each case to enter the number you want. When you get to the AM or PM field, just press A or P and Windows Mobile will fill in the rest.
  • Press the Done button to accept all your entries, and press the Home key to return to the Today screen.
